Overview
To plan an effective treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease, more commonly known as GERD, your doctor must first make an accurate diagnosis.
For years, uncomfortable catheter-based pH monitoring tests made diagnosing GERD an unpleasant experience. But now there’s a better way. Medtronic has developed the world’s first catheter-free test for GERD. It’s called the Bravo® pH Monitoring System.
With the Bravo system, a miniature pH capsule, approximately the size of a gel cap, is temporarily attached to the wall of your esophagus.
The capsule measures pH levels in your esophagus and transmits this information wirelessly to a portable receiver you wear on your waistband. There’s no cumbersome catheter or embarrassing visible wires. These pH measurements allow your doctor to effectively evaluate your acid reflux symptoms.
Key Features
Convenient – The Bravo pH Monitoring System offers a more convenient way to help your doctor determine if you have acid reflux disease.
Catheter-free – The Bravo system allows you to engage in your usual activities during the test period, so you can eat normally, bathe and sleep comfortably, and maintain your daily life.
More Facts
Acid reflux disease can affect your daily life and damage your esophagus. Severe indigestion, burning sensations in your chest, and acid backing up into your throat and mouth may all be signs of GERD. Left untreated, GERD can cause pain and difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), a narrowing of your esophagus (strictures), or Barrett’s Esophagus.
